Term 3 - Week 3
Dear families,
Dads Read was a great morning and the students were able to welcome some of our new preps for next year. After Dads Read finished, the new preps joined our current Prep/1 class and explored their new classroom. They had a great morning!
If you have friends or family with a prep age child for next year, encourage them to attend the next prep transition at 9am on Thursday 18 August.
Something that Mrs Roberts put together to showcase our school is our YouTube video. Click on the link to check it out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKGRFhglgrs
Welcome Gympie Toy Library
Have you seen that the Gympie Toy Library is now based at Gympie Central SS? The Library has huge array of games, puzzles toys and resources for Gympie families. Our school is proud to support the Library and encourages our families to drop in and check out what it has to offer. It opens every Thursday and Friday and access is via the Lawrence St gate near B Block.
Eisteddfod next week!
Good luck to our students who will be competing at the Gympie Eisteddfod next week. Our strings ensemble competes Monday afternoon and there will be individual students who compete at different times during the week. Let’s go Central!
True - Relationships and Reproductive Health
Starting mid-August, all classes will be attending sessions delivered by Qld organisation True. True presents programs around relationships and sexual education.
Supporting the healthy sexual development of children and young people is a responsibility shared by schools and families. Those people who receive comprehensive, respectful Relationship & Sexuality Education (RSE) from an early age inclusive of sexual abuse prevention, are more likely to:
- Make informed and responsible sexual decisions later in life
- Recognise appropriate and inappropriate behaviour
- Understand and accept changes and individual differences
- Talk about their feelings and experiences.
The program aligns with the Australian Curriculum and is delivered by experienced educators. Prep-3 classes will attend 2 x 30-minute sessions and the 4-6 classes have 2 x 60-minute sessions. There will also be a 30-minute parent information session at 9am on the morning of 17 August, the same morning the year 5s and 6s head to camp. There is no cost for the program as the school has funded the program thanks to the Helping Hands Network Foundation grant scheme. However, consent will be required and these will be distributed next week.
The best place to get your questions answered about this program is at the parent information session - Can’t get to the parent session? Click on the link to get more information https://www.true.org.au/
Welcome to our new staff
This term Gympie Central has welcomed new staff to our dedicated team. Natasha Hooklyn has joined us as Head of Department - Curriculum (Mon, Tues and Fri), Lizette Phillips is our new Guidance Officer (Tuesdays) and Beccy Tolcher joins our inclusion team as our support teacher aide (Mon, Tues and Fri).
Father’s Day fundraiser
The P&C is seeking donations for the Father’s Day stall. Donations can be dropped to the office.
Father's Day orders will need to be placed on Qkr! and will be available from Friday 12th August to Friday 26th August. These orders will then be distributed to students on Thursday 1st September (Friday 2nd September is a Student Free Day).
As always, thank you for your continued support!
Change of hat supplier for uniforms
The P&C is considering changing the supplier for our school hats. While the current hats are great quality, the wait time for new hats is very long and the cost of the hats has risen. The new potential supplier has high quality reversible hats and include our logo, but colours are slightly different. The shape of the hats is almost identical. If this is something you would like to discuss, please come along to the next P&C meeting on Monday 29th August.
School Photos
This year our school photos have been scheduled in for Tuesday 9th August. The photography company have created a code for parents/carers to start getting their orders in now. See below for ordering instructions.
Safety Message regarding e-scooters
The health, safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and school community is of the highest priority.
All types of travel have inherent risks. Regardless of how any of us travel, it’s important we are mindful of the potential risks and manage them to avoid incidents and injuries.
With the increasing use of rideables such as electric scooters, skateboards and bikes, ensuring the safety of staff, students and pedestrians is essential.
Please note that Queensland Road Rules apply to e-scooters and e-bikes.
Anyone who scoots, rides or skates to and from school should:
- Wear protective gear and a helmet, which is mandatory if riding an electric scooter or skateboard
- Give way by ringing your bell when approaching pedestrians and overtaking on the right
- Travel at the appropriate and safe speed for the environment in which you are travelling
- Be respectful to pedestrians and other path users and keep out of their way
- Adhere to road rules when riding an e-scooter
- Park responsibly to avoid becoming an obstacle or risk for others.
Remember, we are here to help
Like always, if there is something that you want our support with, or if your child is struggling, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher for support. If it is not a matter for the teacher please call the front office and arrange to meet with a member of the leadership team, so we can work through things together. It takes a village to raise a child, so let’s work together.
Warm regards,
Glenn Cafferky
Hello Gympie Central State School community!
My name is Mrs Lizette Phillips, and I am the school's Guidance Officer. I will be at Central every Tuesday. I can be accessed through the school’s Student Support referral process. This ensures that the children with the highest need receive priority and for this reason, referrals from parents and teachers are taken through that committee. Generally, if you have concerns regarding your child's academic/learning, behavioural, developmental or social and emotional wellbeing, talk first with your child’s teacher.
For concerns that are mainly to do with home, we can support and advise regarding access to a number of support agencies and contacts in the local area, including your family doctor, the Queensland Health Department and community centres.
Contact between myself and your child, apart from an initial "getting to know you” interaction or as a support to the teacher in the classroom can only occur with your written permission/consent.
As the Guidance Officer my role consists of the following:
- Provide counselling services to individual students or in groups.
- Facilitate social skills and emotion regulation groups and programs.
- Psychoeducational assessment and student observation.
- Recommendations and advice concerning educational, behavioural, mental health and family issues.
- Intervention programs and strategies for students.
- Liaise with community support agencies and specialists such as paediatricians and psychologists.
- Case management and referral service.
I look forward to getting to know you all and being a part of the Gympie Central community.
Kind regards,
Lizette Phillips

Student Absence Notification System
Reminder: If your child is absent from school without explanation you will receive a SMS text message that morning to your mobile phone asking to explain their absence. Please reply (on the same day) with a simple SMS answer eg sick; specialist appointment. Alternatively, you can call and leave a message on the Student Absence HOTLINE—Telephone 5480 2166 to report your child’s absence.
Please contact the office by phone if you have any concerns regarding the message you have received.
Qkr Payments!!
Reminder: Qkr is the cashless payment method available at Gympie Central State School which allows parents to pay for items without coming into the office. Qkr is a mobile phone app designed for Australian schools. It can be used to purchase school uniforms, pay for upcoming excursions and events as well as Tuckshop.
Instructions on how to download the app are shown in the link below.
To avoid paying for something twice, please open your Qkr app to review payments already made. Thank you.

Greetings Gympie Central community,
We have hit the ground running in 5/6B with students settling back into learning routines nicely. In English, we have been watching a series called ‘My Place’ which follows the life and times of people living in an area of Sydney from the 1800’s through to today. Students have been unpacking letter writing and will create a ‘Letter to the Future’ for their assessment task.
In HASS we have been learning about how people, places and cultures differ across the world. We conducted a survey of the cultural backgrounds/ family history of 5/6B students. Next, we researched those countries of origin including environment, culture, food, languages and religion, then compiled and presented to class.
Our Science topic for the term is ‘Our Changing World’. We are currently unpacking extreme weather events and their impact on communities.
Finally, we are all getting excited about our upcoming Noosa North Shore Camp and can’t wait to experience canoeing, mountain biking, stand up paddle boarding, archery and night time laser tag!
