Term 2 - Week 3
Dear families,
Gympie Central has a busy few weeks ahead with lots of great things happening. The 3/4H class are off to Sunshine Butterflies to learn more about sustainability, classes will be visiting the Gympie Show (thanks P&C for supporting the cost of the bus!), all students will have the chance to work with manga artist Kenny Chan, Central students will be participating in the Gympie District Cross Country trials and on 22nd May our classes will be participating in the National Simultaneous Storytime.
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 24th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Prep to Year 6.
Goodstart visits - Community partnerships
Our school captains joined Mr Cafferky for their first visit to Goodstart Early Learning Centre on Tuesday. After starting this partnership last year, the children at Goodstart were excited to see the captains arrive and for the next 40 minutes, kept Alex, Jasper and Liam busy - showing them what they could do around their outdoor play area. The captains will be travelling back to Goodstart every three weeks to continue to strengthen this connection.
Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) - Prep students
Prep students received an information letter today regarding the 2024 AEDC information collection. Please check your child’s school bag!
High School Transition
Gympie SHS has shared its enrolment timeline and James Nash SHS will publish theirs shortly. Families of Year 6 students are encouraged to start planning which high school your child will attend, then make contact with that school. GSHS requires an ‘Intent to enrol’ as the first step and these are available from the Gympie Central office.
Welcome Mr Toomey as Acting Principal
I will be absent from Gympie Central SS from next Tuesday 7th May to Wednesday 29th May, and during this time, will be Acting Principal at Maroochydore SS. The position at Maroochydore is backfilling their principal who is on Long Service Leave.
In my absence, Reece Toomey has been appointed Acting Principal of Gympie Central. Mr Toomey has been a principal in the Far North Queensland Region and is currently Deputy Principal at Burnside SS in Nambour. He is looking forward to working with the staff, students and community of Central and will be visiting tomorrow morning for parade. I know the community will make him feel welcome.
Uniforms - navy jumpers in Winter
Students wear our uniform with pride and with the cooler months approaching, navy jumpers are the required winter uniform. Our uniform jumper is navy blue. The uniform shop has jumpers (with logos) for sale. However, a navy-blue jumper without the logo is appropriate as we head into the cooler months. Supporting our uniform policy shows pride in our school and helps children feel part of the school community.
The P&C will host a 2nd hand (and new) uniform sale tomorrow, Friday 3rd May from 8:00-9:00am. There will be:
- navy school jumpers (new and 2nd hand)
- school shirts (new and 2nd hand)
- 2nd hand navy track pants
Kenny Chan Manga Artist - Nexus Arts - Monday 20th May
This term we have Nexus Arts artist Kenny Chan visiting our school on Monday 20th May. Kenny is a manga artist and has run sessions with schools all over Australia. Kenny teaches a quick and simple way to draw original characters in a Japanese comic style. Students will learn tricks to adding personality and humour to their drawings.
Notes went home this week, so check your child's bag for this. Payment of the $7 via Qkr is accepted as permission to attend this incursion. Check out some extra info about Kenny Chan https://nexusarts.com.au/performer/kenny-chan/
I look forward to returning to the Gympie Central community on Thursday 30 May.
Warm regards,
Glenn Cafferky
Payment Options
We have a variety of payment options available here at Gympie Central. Our most preferred method of payment is the Qkr! app. Qkr! is a cashless payment app, which means you can make payments on your mobile phone, rather coming into the school. The Gympie Central P&C also use this app, so not only can you pay for camps and excursions, but you can also order school uniforms and tuckshop with the app.
Instructions on how to download and use the app are shown in the link below.
Other payment options that we provide are:
1. BPOINT - (for invoiced activities) Pay online or by phone using credit/debit card: https://www.bpoint.com.au/payments/dete or phone 1300 631 073
2. CENTREPAY - (for invoiced activities) We now offer Centrepay as a payment method for instrumental music and school camps. Use Centrepay to arrange regular deductions from your Centrelink payment. You can start, change or stop using Centrepay whenever you like. If you would like to set up a Centrepay payment, or know more information about this payment method, please contact the school office.
3. EFTPOS - We accept Mastercard, Visa and all Australian bank, building society and credit union cards.
4. CASH - Cash payments are still accepted. However, the school no longer has the ability to give out change, so only cash payments of the correct denomination will be accepted.
2024 Voluntary Financial Contribution - $20 per student
Each year, the Gympie Central State School P & C Association endorse a voluntary financial contribution of $20 per student, which equates to $0.50 per week for the entire school year. This money is a vital part of Gympie Central P&C’s commitment and helps to fund reading books, classroom resources, photocopying paper and tissues. This year the payment can be made via the Qkr! app or in person at the office. Your support in paying the voluntary contribution is greatly appreciated.
Student Absence Notification System
If your child is absent from school without explanation you will receive a SMS text message that morning to your mobile phone asking to explain their absence. Please reply (on the same day) with a simple SMS answer eg sick; specialist appointment. Alternatively, you can call and leave a message on the Student Absence HOTLINE - Telephone 5480 2166 to report your child’s absence.
Please contact the office by phone if you have any concerns regarding the message you have received.
